Major U.S. technology companies are facing mounting pressure on their finances as the cost of building artificial intelligence infrastructure outpaces the cash those investments generate. An analysis by Reuters of LSEG consensus estimates shows that Microsoft, Alphabet, Amazon, Meta Platforms and Oracle — known as "hyperscalers" for their vast cloud computing operations — are on track to spend roughly $1.57 in capital expenditure for every $1 of additional cash flow by 2027, with combined capex projected to exceed free cash flow entirely. The concern for investors is that if AI-driven revenue growth fails to keep pace with surging infrastructure costs, shareholder returns such as dividends and buybacks could come under threat, with analysts warning the market may begin to question the scale of the investment cycle within two to three years.
