A Toronto police officer has been shot dead after police raided an apartment connected to a March attack on the United States consulate in the city, Toronto's police chief announced. Constable Marc Pinizzotto, 43, was shot during an early-morning search warrant operation in the north-west of Toronto and later died in hospital. The search warrant was related to "a number of shootings, including the shooting at the United States consulate," police chief Myron Demkiw confirmed.
In March, two individuals fired multiple rounds at the US diplomatic building in Toronto before sunrise. No one was injured in the attack, though the exterior of the building was damaged and the suspects fled the scene. US Ambassador to Canada Pete Hoekstra described the incident as "deeply troubling," and Canadian federal police said the investigation would examine whether the attack constituted a terrorist act. The consulate attack came amid heightened tensions following military hostilities between the United States, Israel, and Iran, and occurred in the same period as shootings near two synagogues in the Toronto area.
During Tuesday's raid, a gunfight broke out at an apartment building. One suspect was arrested after being wounded in the exchange of fire. A second suspect, identified by police as 19-year-old Zara Jabbi, remains at large and is considered armed and dangerous. Demkiw urged the public to call emergency services immediately if they spot Jabbi.
Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow paid tribute to the fallen officer, saying she has known his mother for 20 years. "Their grief is shared across this city," Chow said. The killing of Constable Pinizzotto has sharpened the urgency of both the officer's death and the broader investigation into what Canadian authorities have described as a national security incident, with the search for the remaining suspect now a pressing public safety concern.
