US political operative Roger Stone, a longtime ally of President Donald Trump, has been criticised for accepting $50,000 a month to lobby for Myanmar's military government, which seized power in a coup in 2021. Documents filed under the US Foreign Agents Registration Act describe Stone as providing "public affairs services" aimed at rebuilding ties between Myanmar and the United States, with a focus on trade, natural resources, and humanitarian relief. The arrangement has drawn sharp condemnation from activists, with the civil society group Justice for Myanmar accusing Stone and his firm, the DCI Group, of profiting from "a heavily sanctioned junta that is committing war crimes and crimes against humanity" — charges supported by a 2024 UN warning of substantial evidence of atrocities carried out by the military since the coup.
